講題:Energy Situation in Taiwan
摘要:Taiwan – an Eastern Asia island – together with Singapore, Hong Kong and South Korea is known as four Asian dragons due to rapid industrialization, high income economy and outstandingly strong growth rate. The island has an area of 36,000 km2 (136th in the world) with the population about 23,000,000 citizens (global 52nd). Taiwan’s gross domestic product (GDP) per capita reached 22,000 USD in 2016 (international 34th). However, this island has been deeply troubled because of natural resource shortage. It causes a significant high percentage of foreign energy import from other countries all over the world, 95%. The rest of 5% energy is mainly renewable energy, such as: solar, wind, hydropower, waste, etc. Furthermore, it is an essential part within the picture of energy situation in Taiwan, Taiwan’s power generation (electricity production). So far, fossil fuels still play an important role in power production. There was 82% of energy supply, including Coal (45.4%), LNG (32.4%) and Oil (4.1%) for electricity production. Besides, nuclear power makes up 12% of total generated electricity, though new strategies are developed to fade out the contribution of nuclear due to its high risk of uncontrolled explosion. It is hoped that until 2025, it can be eliminated the use of Oil and Nuclear for electricity production, together the use of Coal is decreased to be about 30%. The rest of 6.1% of Taiwan electricity in 2016 is generated from Renewable energy. As a result of new strategies, LNG is expected to be a key resource accounting for 50%, as well as Renewable constituting considerable proportion, 20%, of energy supply for the power generation.
According to data reported, a new figure which is called “Energy Flow” is drawn to show a whole energy situation in Taiwan with more details mentioned. In this talk, the description of “Energy Flow” conducts a detailed analysis based on the numerical data from Taiwan’s Government Annual Report in 2016. This analysis is expected to bring out a clearer and understandable insight into a corner of the entire picture about energy situation in Taiwan in 2016.
