MechaMaTronics - A necessity in today’s world?
This seminar aims to provide an overview of the research in the Mechatronics Engineering program at the University of Auckland, New Zealand where the synergistic combination in Mechatronics to include “Smart Materials”; thus MechaMatronics, which is the combination of Mechanical, Smart Materials and Electronics technologies. This strategy has been a key differentiator, establishing University of Auckland’s Mechatronics research program (and its graduates) as world leaders in this multi-disciplinary area. It has been widely acknowledged that progress of mechatronics systems has been affected by the limitation of present sensors or actuators technologies. On the other hand, the developments of sensors or actuators meeting the required specifications are limited by the development of smart or functional materials. Furthermore, with the current trend of extending the use of Mechatronics systems to health and biological system, the need for smart or functional materials that allows miniaturization with improved performances together bio-compatibility are essential; hence bio-Mechatronics.
Dr. Kean Aw has many industrial experiences before joining the University of Auckland in 2004. He has 15 years’ experience at Intel, Altera and Navman. He is widely recognised for establishing University of Auckland’s Microfabrication Laboratory, a facility with comprehensive, multidisciplinary, and nationally-recognised expertise in a wide range of micro-fabrication technologies. This has enabled novel research area of “MechaMaTronics” at the University of Auckland, and attracted/supported researchers from various departments, faculties and institutions around the country. His expertise lies in micro-engineering of smart materials, and lately have led major interdisciplinary research projects including flexible sensors/electronics using micro-printing technique. Currently, he is an Associate Professor and Deputy Head of Department (Research) at the Department of Mechanical Engineering.
